Google Play is the merge of Google's services into one single service. (Android Market, eBookstore, movie rentals and Google Music Store).

Google Play appears to be the answer to iTunes or Amazon.com. Google has unified all of its different services to cope with the competition.

Users must not mistake Google Play for a new Android Market. While it is centered on the Android Market, it's not mobile only. As Google stated on the features page, you can buy a new album on your Android tablet and listen to it on your desktop at work and the cloud service is free to use.

For those who are wondering what will happen to their Android Market accounts, Google had this to say:

All content and apps in your existing account will remain in your account, but will transition to Google Play. On your device, the Android Market app icon will become the Google Play store icon. You’ll see "Play Store." For the movies, books and music apps, you’ll begin to see Play versions of these as well, such as "Play Music, " and "Play Movies."

Google's strategy with Google Play is to simplify the user experience, making Google Play the place where you can bring together all your favorite digital content, available across most devices.
